Mooney spider window reg

driving down the motorway, chucking it down with rain , i dropped my window down a touch only to see it slowly slide down and dissapear in to the door, the motor spinned over but no glass appeared, managed to get home soaked to the bone, the car is an 05 reg, i rang an alfa dealer for advice was told to jam a bit of wood under to hold window up, slight prob getting in and out as window drop's to miss hood, asked how much the part is 225, told them where they could put that price, i stripped the reg out to see what had failed, the spot welds on the gear cresent had failed, does any one think this should be fixed by alfa as its a manufacturing failer, not due to wear and tear, any one had this fail befor,

Re: spider window reg

The 'spot welds' are almost certainly projection welds. Quite commonly they are used in the quadrant welding process. They should not fail without major distortion of the sector or the arm - literally pulling a slug of metal out of either part. The weld itself should not part company. If it did fail there was a process failure during welding but getting Alfa/Fiat to accept that will be difficult. As the part is about 3 years old they will likely say its fair-wear-and-tear.

By all means try by contacting Fiat UK. They may offer some contribution but be assured it was a manufacturing defect if the weld itself failed.

Re: spider window reg

Same thing happened to my 53 spider last year. SGT replaced the regulator under the warranty as I'd had the car less than a year. If you could get someone to do the welding for you, probably a much cheaper option.
