MAF - the reality?

Hi All,

I have a slight running issue that possibly could be the MAF, so I asked the local specialist to run a diagnostic. He told me the diagnostic came back all clear, but agreed that the MAF might need replacing. I am a bit suspicious, as I did ask him to just clean the probes, but he is telling me that 80 - 90% of the time the MAF electrics are at fault. Is that true? He also told me that a new MAF is about 160GBP (Bosch I presume) and that he has ordered a new one just to 'test whether the old one is at fault' - in this he is not charging me, but I expect that the old one will prove 'faulty' and he will suggest replacing it. I thought that if he disconnected the MAF at source, the subsequent running of the engine would prove whether the MAF was faulty or not.

I have other reasons to be suspicious (he replaced a pipe in the windscreen wash system and charged me 60GBP for it - in the Czech Republic that is a bit extortionate) and he also charged me for an A/C refill and when I mentioned that it had been refilled by the dealer who sold me the car, as an afterthought he mentioned that he had also repaired 2 leaks. However, I want to give him the benefit of doubt, and so the MAF question is the key.

Re: MAF - the reality?

If you check the UK specialists, prices for a genuine Bosch MAF are between £120 and £175 for 2.0/3.0/3.2 cars. Given that yours is (I think) a much rarer version then £160 is pretty good.

Not sure how it works on turbo cars but did you try driving with the MAF unplugged?

Re: MAF - the reality?

I don't think the 2.0V6 Turbo used a modern MAF sensor...

It has the old style as used on the 164 V6.
A new one of those is listed at around £400.....
