GTV revs at idle
I disconnected the battery of my GTV (98 2.0) for a couple of days to charge the battery. Upon reconnection the engine revs between 1000-2000 rpm very regularly every 1 to 2 seconds. One of the theories on-line was that the ECU needed re-setting and this was done by driving at least ten miles, after shorting the power leads for 10 seconds (with battery earth removed obviously!). I driven nearly 20 and it's still revving. The car did seem to be adjusting throttle positions at about 11 miles for a short while.
The other theory was the idle step motor, but it seems to me that if this simple device went wrong it would effect the whole rev range - the car acts perfectly normally until the revs and non-throttle position drop to the 2000 rpm area.
Has anyone come across this before?
Found a split in the rubber air intake, which I've sealed. Engine now does the same sort of thing, but lumpy and at much lower revs, and stalls sometimes at junctions. Reset ecu, done another 10+ miles but no change.
Taken everything apart, cleaned and put it back together, tick over seems to be simply lumpy now? All very confusing when it was working perfectly before I disconnected the battery?????
