Yes.. first job is put some oil in there.. any 10W40 semi synthetic will do.. Halfords 10W40 in the green can, if you can't decide what brand for the moment.
If the light goes out permanantly and the noises stop, you will still need a variator to sort that diesel rattle at start-up.
If you change the variator, it is probably a good idea to also change the cam-belt and tensioner (plus the balance belt) unless you know for sure when they were last done. The tensioner is a bit feeble (change at 36,000 miles without fail) and when it packs up, it takes the motor with it..
Anyway, variator can only be changed by dismantling this lot, so may as well assemble with new parts as it's the labour that's most expensive.
