Moving from a 146ti to a 3.0 GTv, the difference between the braking is very noticeable. The brakes on the Ti are awesome, not uncommon to overbrake in traffic and stop yards before I expect to and are over servo'ed if anything . Why the GTV is not like this is beyond me and I often have to make a conscious effort to stop in time. Having said that our GTV is better than you guys have described here.
No, I don't think that poor braking is normal. Mine are standard and I can brake quick enough to induce the antilock braking without much effort.
All the ABS activating means is that your tyres are locking up on the road. You could just have really, really poor tyres on, doesn't mean you have good brakes. Or you could have good brakes. But it could be either.
I take your point. The tyres are a new matched set - Toyos. I know they get mixed reviews but for me the grip is good (just as well given the weight of a GTV!)
IMO, my standard brakes work well because all the components are newish and in good condition. I'm sure that a lot of these regular posts complaining about poor GTV brakes are really caused by worn out components - not surprising really considering the age of most of our cars.
