Symonh is right here. I bought a set of Ultra Blue Xenon from eBay, absolute waste of money. There seemed to be plenty of light but it was scattered everywhere, going down a lit urban road I had to check to see if the lights were on - appalling.

Switched to the Ring ones and there is a HUGE difference.

Re: Headlight Upgrade?

So for the GTV if you went down the phillips blue vision (which seems reasonably priced)

what bulbs would you need to order?

4 X 9005 HB3 bulbs? for head lights and normal front lights?

There seem to be differences on this, perhaps it depends what was in the parts bin on the day it was built.

For me they are all HB 3 but I'm pretty sure that I have read on here that some have HB 4 for all and some have HB 3 in one pair and HB 4 in the other pair.

I reckon that safest way is to physically have a look at what is currently fitted, it only takes a few minutes and then at least you'll know that you'll be ordering the correct fitting lamps.

Whether or not you'll get the lamps that give you the best performance is obviously a different matter, different people have different views. The only way to know for sure is to buy and try, comparing all the different options yourself, hardly a cost effective proposition.

Re: Headlight Upgrade?

So far as I can see the only difference between HB3 and HB4 is the wattage, one being 55, the other 60. Physically they appear identical.

Afraid not, the fitments are different, I think it's the spacing between the bayonet type lugs that's slightly different. You can get a variety of different wattages in both fitments, I have had 55, 60 and 65 Watts in HB 3 fittings.

Have a look at Post #29 Del. I would think so but it would be wise to check on your car. I believe that there COULD be differences in individual cars. All I can say for sure is that on my 97 P1 they are all HB 3 fitments.

It's simple enough to do, about four screws each side to remove the black plastic covers and there will be a label on the back of the bulb itself which will tell you what fitment they are. Don't worry about the Wattage, once you have found out which fitment it is go ahead and order whichever bulbs you think will be best, I'll leave that to you !

Well thats very strange, on mine I took out the HB3 and HB4 and replaced all with Ring +50% HB3, and they are "brilliant".

Very strange. As you can see from the specs below the bases are different sizes. Looking at that it may be that you can replace HB 4 with HB 3 although the fitment may be a touch loose. It would seem unlikely that HB 3 could be replaced with HB 4 unless you get the file out !

Voltage Wattage Lumens Base

HB3 12 60 1860 P20d

HB4 12 51 1095 P22d
