My old bus (12v v6 in a 155) always runs up to 85C on a cold day, 88 ~ 90C on a hot day and then never goes above 90 ~ 92C (fan).
So if I saw a steady temp' of 70C I'd say the 'stat was knackered.
By the way... it may be worth using a genooine parts thermostat for the money they cost, compared to pattern parts. That may account for the difference in running temperatures and durability reported.
My 'stats are OE, I use a 50% anti-freeze mix to stop them corroding and they last about 3~4 years. I'm on my second one in 7 years anyway.
