Tapping from a GTV V6 Turbo engine....
I may about to be the new owner of a 1997 GTV V6 Turbo, but one issue needs to be clarified.
It recently (200kms ago) had the crankshaft refurbished and new bearings fitted, along with a new cambelt, oil, etc. The car runs sweet, but there is a distinct tapping coming from the engine. You can only hear it outside with the bonnet open, you can't hear it inside the car.
I am fairly inept when it comes to checking where exactly the tapping is coming from, but the seller (a used car dealer) tells me that the engine needs to be run in following the bottom engine re-work, and once the car has been run fairly gently for another 800kms and the oil is replaced, the noise should disappear (the re-work is guaranteed for 2 years under Czech law).
The tapping sound does remind me of the noise tappets make, and is certainly not a knock. The car has covered just under 100,000 miles.
Any ideas? Does the car have hydraulic tappets and if it were the tappets, is it OK to run the car like it is? If it is the tappets, any idea what the cost would be to fix the issue?
