Like v6junky, I also had a 164 whose power steering developed a sudden, massive leak (litre-a-minute type). I put the whole tin of stop-leak in, topped up with ATF, wound the steering from lock to lock a few times with front wheels jacked up and engine running. Cleaned up the rack. It was fine after that, didn't lose any more fluid, I sold the car a year later.
So I think these racks are prone to a seal popping out, especially if the steering is operated without the engine running (which is what happened to mine). Of course it makes sense to try and find any leaky hose first.
