Re: £3K to £5K to Spend on a GTV V6 - What can I expect?
Perhaps my recent experience would help? I had the same budget and wanted to avoid anything that needed loads of work, wanted V6, black leather, phase 2 but pre 2001 and 17" teledials. Also wanted to keep £1000 back for any nasty Alfa surprises. I paid £3300, but would have gone a bit higher as I was struggling to find a good enough example. I suspect the seller would have gone lower if I had pushed harder. I got a 2000, V6, 77,000 miles, FSH, very recent cambelt, sparkplugs, new radiator, tyres, brakes, oil cooler, MAF, front and rear suspension rebuild (using NEW spring pans and doglegs). All work done by the Alfaworkshop. Immaculate inside and out and drives superbly. 12 months tax/MOT, all keys & codes. Downsides? No evidence of clutch change, although it is still light, does not slip and has a good biting point. Exhaust not yet changed (but does not need changing either). Some minor scuffing to 2 of the alloys. Climate control blows cool rather than cold air. No fobs for the alarm (not required by my insurance however). Managed to trip the airbag light 2 days after purchase (reset by my local garage). Changed the thermostat myself, because it was leaking slightly and running a bit cool. If the clutch needs changing, I understand it will add between £500 - £1000 and a new exhaust will not be cheap either when that goes - potentially my £3300 car could end up between £4000-£4500 and although I may be lucky, I am prepared for the extra.
With more time and patience I expect I could have got similar cheaper, but in the real world excellent AND cheap never seem to be available when I am looking. I have seen many real bargains but you need to factor in the cost of fixing all the things that have/are likely to fail on an 8/9/10 year old car (all the above and more). Your budget seems about right to either buy an excellent example with all the major jobs done that will not give you any major heartache, or to buy and bring an average example up to spec. Good luck with your search.
