Keep in mind that 3 elements influence ride: shocks, springs and tyres and in the case of the tyres, the ride is dependent on the height and flexibility of the sidewalls.
I had a set of 245x35x17 contis on the 164 with a recomended 2.8 to 2.6 (cold) and that was hard as hell. The problem with wide tyres is the loss of grip you will get if running deflated and the ride will always be harsh at correct pressures. I found the contis to be a bit naff on grip - too hard a compound.
Nasty for day to day use really. Running more sensible sizes these days...
