mystery rumble

I've got an 05 reg 916 spider with just 12,000 miles on the clock.

I'm getting a faint rumble that's quite noticeable on a smooth road.
It seems to be coming from the back ( maybe driver's side ) and sounds like I've got a stone stuck in the tyre tread or like I'm going over little bumps in the road.

I don't think it's there all the time, but when it is, I'm sure it picks up speed according to how fast I'm going.

Any ideas ?

Re: mystery rumble

Check the tyres for signs of ageing (not wear) and get a balance done. The only other thing I can think of is a buckled wheel.

Re: mystery rumble

It might be a wheel bearing on the way out... depending on how bad it is that's easy enough to check by jacking the car up and gripping the tyre top & bottom and seeing if you can rock it at all, and then doing the same side to side.. if it 'notches' then the bearing is probably shot,,,, unfortunately if it doesn't that does not mean it's oK - merely not that bad yet..

You could always go the extra step & pop them out and repack them (but if you're going to that trouble it might be just as well to replace them while you're there..
