The decorative top cover, with the Alfa Romeo writing on it on the front bank is easy enough to remove, you just need an allan key to remove the four fasteners holding it on. You can see the four that you have to take off on kernowmcrae's picture above, they're the four inner-most fasteners running around and nearest the Alfa Romeo writing. The only awkward one is by the dip stick and may require loosening (not removing) of the dip stick attachment bracket but otherwise easy!
The other 12 (I think) fasteners running around the outside of the decorative top cover holds the cam cover on the front bank and you don't want to remove that.
I just found it easier to clean this part of the engine up with the top cover removed. This also lets you see the ignition coils for the front bank and stops you getting any cleaner on anything else you didn't want it on. The rear bank is under the plenum chamber so you'd be better off cleaning what you can reach and just give the plenum a good cleam.
