GTV milky cap

Dear all

i am thinking of buying a GTV. i have just been to see a 2001 model 16v 2.0 ts. it had a milky residue in the top of the oil cap, is the cylinder head going and if so how much to replace.

Also what problems may occur it has done 57,000 miles.

Re: GTV milky cap

I had a 1.8 TS 146 that had that from the day I bought it. I ran it for 3 years. Its possible it could be just condensation? Is it a private sale or trade? You could run it and see if its losing fluids! I would procede with a little caution, but its possible that its not the gasket.

I am not sure how much it would cost to get the head gasket done!

Re: GTV milky cap

Ask to take it for a run. I would guess that the thermostat has failed and its not getting hot enough to burn off the condensation. They usually last far fewer than 57,000 miles. The temp should sit at between 85 and 90ºC, If the stat has gone it will sit nearer to 70ºC.

HG failure is comparatively rare on TS cars. If you are worried get a sniff test done on the coolant in the expansion tank.
