Variator tightening torque?

Hi,

Does anyone know how how tight a new variator should be torqued to? I can't find the answer anywhere... I've even tried reading the manual

Thanks,

Iain

Re: Variator tightening torque?

This was answered in my 'TDC' thread. 'Very tight' is the answer

I went for 85 ft lbs, and a high-strength loctite. I can't see it coming off easily at that...

I hope you never need to get it off again I used medium strength loctite on mine for that very reason. Alfa actually say you should just apply mastic and I know people who haven't used any thread locker at all. As you already mentioned in the other thread, the clockwise rotation of the engine is enough to keep the threads tightly locked together anyway.

I believe the reason that no torque is specified anywhere is because Alfa originally believed that under normal circumstances the variator should last the lifetime of the engine...how wrong they were

Re: Variator tightening torque?

When I said very tight in the other thread I meant tight enough to make sure it doesn't come undone.

It is pretty tight to get off the cam anyway.

Re: Variator tightening torque?

The new variators (P/N 60666199) are supposed to have a better life expectancy than the old ones (55202772) so hopefully I'll not have to take it off again.

If I do, I'll just buy a bigger vice
