Hmmm Brakes

I've got a judder on the old brakes which has been diagnosed as uneven wear on one of the front discs.

The mechanic who pulled her to pieces (an ex Alfa man) reckons new discs and pads is all that's needed, although I'm wondering what could have caused the wear to be uneven - any ideas? Also, the discs have only done 9,000 miles, which seems rather short life (or is that about right on a V6 GTV?)

Been quoted just shy of 400 big uns for genuine Alfa discs and pads fitted (fronts only). Does this sound fair?

Sounds pricey to me. Try the Red Dot six groove discs and pads, they do give much better bite and confidence. . For labour it's no more than half an hour per side - don't pay over the odds, certainly don't pay this for the OE rubbish.

Re: Brakes

Should have a lot of life left at that mileage. People refer to the judder as disc warping but thats a myth. Its either a deposit of pad material if you sit stationary with brakes on when discs are very hot or slight build up of rust if its not used frequently. Discs might just want skimming or cleaning up by filing/grinding off any lip thats formed around the edge.

Price is very high. Can probably get the parts for less than a third of that - try Fiat Parts and Alfa Romeo Parts from Shop4Parts or Alfa Romeo Parts and Alfa Romeo Spares from EB Spares - Specialist Alfa Parts Dealers and its an easy diy job, so a doddle for a garage.
