Re: GTV steering rack
I have not done it myself. But my car had been back (under warranty) for oil leaking from the recon steering rack on numerous occasions. This job is apparently not an easy or straightforward one. Removing and reinstalling the rack had lead to: a) Threads that have been stripped, b) steering pump hoses being pinched and obstructing the movement of the gearlever, and c) rattles developing. I am also under the impression that the engine need to be tilted everytime to make space for the R & I of the rack, putting some components at risk. The exhaust also needs to be removed from the engine. It also entails that the whole suspension assembly on one of the front wheels be removed.
The reconditioning of the rack is obviously outsourced, and the repairs covered by the 12 months warranty. You must have seen my mechanics eyes roll when I last week again complained about some drops of red oil on my garage floor, as the labour is for his account. He strongly recommended that I now look for a brand new rack for my 2.0 TS.
