Yes that's true I am looking at getting it and maybe some ecu remapping software. Have to be careful there though as there is potential to erase data or damage the eeprom on the unit.
I am a computer & control systems engineer so for me it's not really that big a deal to do it, but for people who are not it could be.
As for finding out the model for my car there is are some software kicking about and some good diag tools which help you determine which one. I looked it up from a listing of alfa models and possible ECU's that could be installed from one. See alfa145 as in post above for some more details.
To err is human, but you need an Alfa to really screw things up!
