Hi alfa friends!,
I must say from the off that my recent relationship with my beautiful baby 2.0 TS (98) 16v Spider is really testing my patience! Its not really the car its more the useless mechanic that im currently being taken for a eide with!?........
The long and short of it is, MOT due, local mechanic recommended by friend(usual story). MOT check done and told that i needed two new rear shocks, new exhaust rear section(The Expensive bit!) new front caliper as i noticed one of the calipers had seized, new front brake hoses and he was not to engine service it as it was going to an alfa specialist once mot'd to be tuned and electrics re-earthed.
How much do you think?
£500, thought exhaust, £160 Rear Shocks £75, Front Brake hoses £15, caliper rebuild kit £60 so, i thought well £ 200 labour what the heck!?
Picked the car up this morning after having paid him £300 cash already and expecting to settle once mot was given. (i must point out that i live in N. Ireland and our MOT's are undertaken by the government at huge regional test centres in many large towns.) Anyways, i picked the car up and he had only washed the underside but! im not that bothered about that! Anyways, i went for a spin and immediately, this grindinding noise coming from the front wheel drove for a few miles and it was not going away! went back and he lifted front wheel at drivers side and it was hanging off literally! Took of front wheel and the nut that secures the hub was right at end of its thread!!!!!! He tightened the nut! took a screwdriver and proceeded to bend the nut into the recess in the thread and said that its fine now!!?
Got in car drove 18 miles to test centre sorry! actually drove 16 before i had to stop due to grinding noise, checked front wheel for play! No play! so! the car is currently sitting 16miles away until this mechanic can be bothered to lift it, so obviously im pretty peeved! and was wondering if any of you guys would have any ideas i have searched forum and am confused as to whether it might be disc warped? Drive shaft? Wheel caliper? Wheel bearing?
Symptons as follows:
1. Awful grinding noise from front wheel drivers side from 30 upto 60mph is unbearable!
NB* Noise is constant wether i turn left or right!
2.) Under braking only (Hard) in a straight line the car ducks to right and then settles kind of.
3.) No diving or ducking to right or left under acceleration.
Thanks for listening to my rant!
