I wouln't have though that skimming the head would have raised the compression enough to affect the small end bearings, however if the head is skimmed a lot it can reduce the clearance between the open valves and the top of the piston.
I would have thought that problems would have been apparent as soon as the engine was started though if this was the case, unless the cambelt has slipped a tooth, causing the piston to hit the head.
Out of interest how long was the car run with the failed head gasket?
