Couple of strange problems?

I have had my new W reg GTV for a couple of weeks now, and all seems okay.
I had the sparks changed last week because they had done 59K, so they were due a change anyway.
Today I went to start the car, and the fuel gauge shot straight up, and the the tank low light came on. It wouldn't start, and the rev needle stuck on 3000 RPM even though the engine wasn't running?
Gave it a couple of mins, and the car started fine.

Second problem is it seems a bit sluggish. Pulling away in first, it seems to take a while winding up, then it finds its feet and pulls away. Change to second gear, and it just seems to shunt back slightly, then get going again.
Could this be the MAF I have read so much about?

This is my second GTV, and I never had this kind of problem with the first one.

Your help is appreciated

Re: Couple of strange problems?

First check you battery connections and earths esopecially any around the dash. Your glitch might be upsetting the ECU. I'd make sure that was sorted before you shell out on a MAF. But the easy way to test it is to disconnect it and see if its any worse.
