It's most likely the switches, they're not very good! My map light switch never seemed to work, but would occasionally switch itself on at random times. Upon investigation (i.e. hacking the switch apart) I found the switch mechanism basically relied on the springiness of a bit of metal, once the springiness is gone the contacts don't stay together when you engage the switch. It's a needlessly complicated design which seems to have been designed to wear out necessitating replacement of the whole unit - cost of a replacement is around £40 last time I checked. Nothing to do with the ECU btw - the light unit has a permanent 12V supply which is made/broken by the switches.
