Assuming that you can demonstrate that the accident was his fault, it usually is when hit from the rear but his insurers may argue the toss, then he is liable.
You are entitled to claim for personal injury and wiplash is recognised as a genuine injury. It can be several thousands but insurers are generally suspicious as there are lots of made up claims for this. Go and see your doctor immediatly and try to get refered, either way make sure you have records of the visit, recomedations, treatments etc. Contact his insurers straight away and make it clear that you are serious. Don't be fobbed off or delayed.
The car may well be repairable, from what you describe and my brief looks under the rear there is quite a bit of space before you get to the serious structural stuff. This doesn't mean that it won't be a commercial write off and you may want it to be. Get a quote from an Alfa dealer which should be good for a laugh. Nowadays there are a number of classes of write offs and a lot depends on the market value of the car. Either way be careful as these are notified to the DVLA and you may have to get the car inspected after repair before they will take it off the register.
