Re: Noisy tick over.
... another weird thing is my car for ages has had this hi pitched screech like rotating metal scraping at start up in the cold, ....
Ah, now mine has just (last couple of weeks) started doing exactly that!
First time, I drove it to work (10 minutes) and it did it all the way; stopped engine, opened bonnet to let a mechanic hear it, started up, nothing! A few days later, it did it again -- shut it down immediately, started up again, quiet as it should be!
A couple more times recently, always goes away if I shut down/re-start. It sounds to me like it's coming from under the cambelt cover -- as the belt was done just over 14 months ago, should I be panicking a) a bit, b) a lot, or c) severely? It sounds, as you describe it, like a screwdriver held against the flywheel -- a loud, ringing metallic continuous scraping.
Any ideas, guys?
If you can play a guitar and harmonica at the same time, like Bob Dylan or Neil Young, you're a genius. But make that extra bit of effort and strap some cymbals to your knees, suddenly people want to get the hell away from you.
