Has anyone experienced this? Only happens infrequently, and only at hight revs…I have the 2.0 JTS engine

OK, this is usually caused by the brushes being worn and the tension on the integral spring no longer being strong enough to push the brush it to the commutator. As the revs rise, the springs simply are nor up to the job, especially if the commutator shaft is slightly out of true.
This is sometimes only a build up of dirt or carbon, so a good clean can do the job.
Have look online for instructions. It is a cheap and easy fix.

My jts started doing similar @ over 6k revs intermittantly for 18mts before finally ,during an Italian tune-up on the way to its mot,it stopped working altogether. It passed its mot, with the battery light on :) .Managed to get the car home after charging the battery at the garage, and then the next day it started working again.
Might have been able to fix the faulty alternator, but the biggest ball ache is actually getting the alternator off - not a job i wanted to do again in a few months - so i put a new alternator in

Thanks for the input guys. I did some more reading and sounds like the alternator is a PITA to access and work on. Guessing if I have to get to it, I might as well replace it rather than try to fettle - much like your thoughts JRow. I'll probably be a bit out of my depth trying to change it myself so looks like getting booked in at some point.
