Problem starting GTV when engine's hot
Newbie to this forum here wondering if anyone can help.
Got a 1999 2.0l GTV which has been incredibly reliable as long as I've had it. However, just recently I've been having problems starting the car when it's hot - only after very long journeys (after 3 of 4 hours of driving.)
Example of recent journey from Cork to Dublin and back total 8 hours or so: Drive for 3.5 hours. Stop. Restart 5 minutes later - perfect. Drive for another half hour. Stop for lunch. Restart 40 minutes later. This time the starter motor perfectly fine - But then the engine attempts to kick in and then instantly dies. Turn the ignition a couple of times - adding a bit of weight to the accelerator and we splutter to life.
Then we're off again running smoothly for about 40 minutes. Then I stop for petrol. This time she starts perfectly. Drive for 3 hours - been giving it major welly so I need a splash and dash to get home! This time however when restarting we're back to splutter, splutter, die...worse than before. I'm thinking it's time to get the mobile out to call the missus, when the engine does get going - but this time with a bit of a bang to start with - sounded as if it was from the exhaust, but hard to tell - didn't sound healthy though.
Then we go home.....next morning - no prob starting - in fact starting from cold is always perfect - it just seems that while the car is hot after a long journey that's the prob.
Anyone had the same probs - I've read about other types of car where faulty valves and stuff mean fuel vapour can go places it shouldn't and cause this type of thing - dunno if that's common in the GTV - haven't seen any other posts on the same topic but I'm hopingthat some of you might have some ideas before I talk to a mechanic / dealership etc.
thanks in advance for your help
