Please can somebody give me some experienced steps on getting all the plastic out of the back of the engine.

I am working to replace the crank sensor and brake master cylinder.

I am removing the front section of the exhaust, essential to get a hand up the back of the engine.

I removed one bolt from the air intake nearest the throttle body, but I cannot manage to undo the one nearest the power steering reservoir.

How on earth is this humanly possible? Please can somebody tell me? I have had my arm underneath the back, I got a spanner onto the nut but it is impossible to lever the spanner.

If do manage to get it off, I think I then have to undo a support bracket beneath the air intake, I have seen it from under the back of the engine.

When I get to the brake master cylinder, what do I have to undo from the inside footwell?

Thanks.

It is a pig :)
Move the three electric connectors and the small bar connected to the top engine mount out of the way to give a bit more room. You should now be able to hold the socket on the nut with one hand, and use the other hand around the back of the manifold to undo it.
The two bolts close together in the middle on the bracket - if you've got the exhaust off -its prob easiest from underneath with extensions and wobble bars. That said, i think i had a problem on my ph1 with a bracket in the way of one bolt and had to do it from the top-which was a nightmare too.
Good luck !
I think i may have to tackle the brake master cylinder on mine in the not to distant future, pedals a bit stiff

I am afraid my best attempts failed today. I can't see what you mean JRow, this is a '98 P2 TS GTV I've got. I can't see how removing the engine mount next to the power steering reservoir would do anything, even if I could do it.

Further to this I succeeded at removing the bolt for the crank sensor from above, but I cannot get the sensor off the engine, it is as if it is superglued to it! I can't see to get a screw driver to prise it out..... What a nightmare. See what tomorrow brings... Selling the car as a "project" has even crossed my mind!!!!

Sorry ,yeah ph2 has the power steering vessel in the way as well :(
When i did the alternater on my ph3 i remember unbolting the power steering vessel and moving it out of the way to be able to get to the bolt on the air intake, but cant really remember how i did it ,or whether it is really neccesary. You need either ball ended allen keys or a flexi-shaft 1/4 drive -possibly both,to get to the allen bolts holding the vessel on -really is a pain in the ass

To give yourself more room for manoeuver, it can be worth releasing the afore-mentioned top steady bar, placing a jack under the sump to support the weight, then releasing the offside front engine mount - then lowering the jack slightly to let the engine drop forward slightly....

Taking off the plenum with the engine in the car is a PITA, though ;)
