Wiper motor repair

Since getting the car the wipers have worked only on each speed and stopped when switched off at that point on the windcreen.

I first bought a replacement relay unit N14 but when connected or not connected at all the fault remained the same.

I bought a second hand wiper motor and linkage to see if the wiper contol box was the fault.

This morning when removing the wiper motor to change it I found that the wiring had been cut on one of the connectors to the control box and re connected
to two strange wires which must have been supplying the control box with 12Vdc

I cut and butt connected the orginal wires but the wiper motor did now not work at all but just clicked.

Then also today I inspected the N14 relay board which I had taken out some months ago and also removed the relay board from the replacement unit to see this!!!!!

No yet and that is rust!!

I traced back the twin wires which were connected to the wiper motor and they disappeared into the relay box on the firewall. When I removed the cover I found them connected to a set of relays with another two wires going to the dash. I then removed the steering cowling to find two wires cut (GY and BLT -White) from the centre black connector on the switch cluster and joined to the these twin wires.

It would seem that a somebody did not know about the relay box N14 and tried to make it work.

My next job is to rejoin the wires in the steering cowling and then the replacement N14 control box and see what happens.

Does anybody have a picture of the relays on the fire wall as I'm not sure what is original and what's been added.

Don't have a pic but I would also advise removing the plastic face cap from the linkage motor assembly. You will see three grooves usually gummed up and dirty with black grease and grime. Give it a good spray with carb cleaner but be careful not to disturb the thin contact guides in the grooves.. refit the cover.

When the guides are gummed up, they loose contact, the motor works harder and as a result everything gets overloaded and contacts burn out!
Don't just replace the issue, cure the initial cause too!

Well today I'm going to rejoin the wires at the switch cluster and fit the N14 module. As the wiper motor and linkage have been replaced as said before, I hope this returns normal operation.
