Speedo not working after rebuild

Can't get the speedo to work on an Apr 2000 V6 after pretty much a complete rebuild incl engine out & box etc. There is a p0500 fault code on the engine ecu (no speed signal), there is no ABS light on & no faults in the ABS ecu. The gearbox is now a 6 speed after swapping out the 5 speed (no speedo drive). I've swapped the Engine & ABS ecu's with spares but no joy there, I've also swapped a different instrument cluster. I have continuity from the ABS ecu to the passenger footwell connector. All fuses look good.
Apart from a spare blue wire in the passenger footwell that I cannot find anything to connect to I'm a bit stuck....any help from the electric gurus gratefully received.
