Is this really necessary?

I have had my 1997 twinnie GTV for 8 years this month. When I bought it it had 61500 miles on the clock and it now has 83500. For four years it was my main car but over the last four years the most it has done in a year is 1400 miles. I change the oil and filter every year and am wondering if I really need to do this on such low mileage using modern oils. I don't mind, in fact I quite enjoy doing it as I get under the car and check out that all look OK under there. I use the car on high days and holidays and only in the dry these days.

Any harm if I left it two years between changes? I know yearly changes are recommended but at such low mileage? Really?

I would say that it would be fine to leave it two years, providing that when you do use the car it gets a decent run.

Short trips cause more fuel contamination in the oil due to richer cold start running, and if the car wasn't used for longer runs it will stay in the oil instead of evaporating out.

Good points I think, thanks
