Unhappy HELP! I think this sounds expensive

Few weeks back I took my GTV to mechanic and described this:

When I lift my clutch up theres a clunk and lurch back as the car engages gear. This happens in all gears, but most noticeable when setting off.

When you let off the accelerator the car lurches forward, put your foot down again and the car ruches back again.

When i say lurches, it feels like the whole engine is moving feely of the car..

So we replaced engine mounts and a drive shaft. . . still there.

Jacked it up last night and rooted the front wheel back and forth. there other drive shaft has a little play in it, but nothing major. Then i put the car IN GEAR and jacked up one side. I can freely turn the wheel forward and back about a 8th of a turn, stopping when I here a loud clunk in the middle of the car.

(Not had chance to repeat this on the other side yet as I had to go out.)

Now, I am right in thinking, you shouldn't be able to to turn a cars wheel AT ALL if one wheel is one the ground and on is in the air. If the car is IN GEAR?

Please if anyone has any ideas of what this could be please let me know. I leaning towards gearbox internals. . . .

There's always some backlash to take up in the diff and driveshafts but 1/8th turn sounds quite a lot. If you car is fitted with a dual mass flywheel I'd suggest that is the likely culprit

If one wheel is on the ground and in gear you are turning the engine.

You can keep rotating it. But make sure the crank pulley is rotating clockwise.
I use this method for timing belts.
