Emissions skullduggery ...

2004 2.0 JTS GTV 57k...
Warning from my recent MOT is that my emission level is perilously close to failing... I have noticed that the exhaust has a dense black soot coating around the lip... And there's often a smell of what I think could be unburnt fuel in the air after a 'run'... I've not had the mapping checked yet, but presume this is first step?
I had all filters changed and new plugs pre-MOT...
Any pointers appreciated...

Sounds like its running rich. This means either the MAF of the Lambda sensor needs replacing

My JTS GTV (103k) has always had dense black soot over the exhaust exit, probably why Alfa fitted a black 'beans can' exhaust end as standard. When I had my free flow stainless exhaust fitted by Gus of Alfatune he said that the old exhaust was very heavy with carbon buildup, and that this was normal for the JTS engine.

A recommendation from Gus was to run injector cleaner about twice a year at 1 can per ⅓ or a tank of fuel. I personally use BG44K.

My results from the last MOT were:
fast idle / CO 0.10% / HC 17 ppm / lambda 1.002
natural idle / CO 0.09%

If you are still using the original exhaust I would suggest having a free flow system fitted, they do not need to be noisy.

Could also be the injectors. They have a hard life in the JTS engine and I think there was an unofficial 50k mile service interval for them.
