Oily alternator..

Hi All

Just spent a not very productive evening faffing about with 19 mm socket and scaffold pole
getting the o/s/f wheel off (previosly done up by a tame gorilla no doubt) then more irritation with the lower not so captive bolt on the alternator belt cover. When eventually removed I noticed a fair amount of oily grime around the alternator and drve shaft area - loooks like a slowish leak from somewhere, too dark to take a good luck - any ideas ?

Cheers

JS

Tappet cover. Is it a V6? Mine did the same despite new gaskets 10000km ago. The oil usually escapes from the breather pipe o-ring seal in the tappet cover and flows along the gasket seam to the rear of the bank where it drips off onto the alternator.

No 'tis a TS..

Thansk for the reply though - I take it unlikely to be the same issue..

Could be Powersteering fluid? Alternatively there is an oil-way in the inlet manifold for the variator solenoid, oil can leak from here or blow by the solenoid.

How about just inner CV boot split and what you are seeing is grease and dirt? I've lost count of the number of inner boots I've replaced in the last couple of years - 11, I think.
