Phase 2 blowing hot air
I'm abit annoyed at myself for not digging deeper into this issue and not really knowing the car assumed the aircon wasn't working so ripped it out to save some weight for the rally.
Basically it's constantly blowing hot air when set to cold (was dying today )
Being phase 2 i understand it's electronically controlled but has anyone found a cause/solution?
Thanks

on my wifes fords there is a valve that cuts the hot water supply to the matrix when on cold. when it goes it will either shut off open (hot air) or closed (cold air). i think that the spider has one also with the a/c fitted. was easy to replace on the ford and cost less than £20

No water valve on the p2/3. The heater matrix is permanently in circuit. A flap inside the heater unit controls how much air flows through the heater matrix or bypasses it.
If everything else is working OK ( air flow direction, recirculation ) the probable fault in this case is the motor that drives the flap.
In this photo
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...5_DSC_0004.jpg
you can see two motors ( the things with barcodes ). One is for air flow direction (screen, face, footwell ) and the other is the one that's probably faulty. The view in that photograph is the one you'd get from the driver's footwell.
Take off the carpeted side trim, and operate the direction control. You'll be able to hear the motor doing it's thing and identify which motor is which. Then operate the temperature control along it's full range. If there's no life from the motor, you've probably found the fault - either the motor itself or a wiring issue between the ECU and the motor.
Those motors ( part number 77362636 ) were also used on the 156 up to 2002.

I've just remembered. If you have a fully paid for version of FiatECUScan and a suitable lead ( it needs to connect to pin 9 of the diagnostic socket ), you can use that to monitor the mix motor. The version of FiatECUScan needs to be fairly recent as the ability to connect to the GTV/Spider Climate ECU has only been enabled fairly recently.

Finally got round to trying to sort this problem out..
Took the motor off and tested it on a supply and works ok (bad news really) snapped a clip though that holds the motor in place ffs.
Had a multi-meter on the connector and got the following readings
Pin1 = 11.5v (13 when engine running)
Pin2 = 2.5v
Pin3 = Ground
Pin4 = No connection
Pin5 = 4.98v
Pin6 = 4.93v
There's no change when turning the knob :S

At the risk of another clip, you could try swapping the two motors and see if the problem moves.
If the motor is faulty, you should then be able to vary the temperature but not change the direction the air goes ( screen, footwell, vents ).
That's probably the easiest test to do.

pKr, you do have amazing knowledge, perhaps you could write a new manual, it would be a best seller. Or a new section on here called Ask pKr.

Update, as the new owner, we now have 'NO' hot/warm air coming through at all, we also have zero on the water temp gauge (i tried a different thermostat, no change) if the car is left to idle it will go up to 90+ and the fan kicks in, driving though, zero...
So i think that (i put the thermostat in a pan and poured boiling water in it, plunger came down, went back up with cold water) the thermostat is working and even a blocked/non opening matrix should not cause the temp gauge to read zero......
If I was American I would be a trailor trash red neck...

No mate, it was a while before i checked threads (yesterday.. ) and now have an idea what the problem is, are both motors still in there ?????
Ah just found the aux connector, i would never have found it if you had not said, is it just power or does it amazingly connect to the stereo..

I took one of the motors out because it seems to be faulty and cold air was better than hot air on the trip
If you plug an ipod in or something and switch the stereo to aux 1 it will work, won't charge up though
