GTV Cam Belt change

Hi,

I have read that you should change the cambelt on a GTV every 36K miles rather than the manufacturers recomendation of every 72K miles.
Does anyone have any advice on this, I have just bought my GTV which had its cambelt done at 85K and is currently on 110K.

Also is it a must to use Selenia oil ?

Thanks
Lee

Yes its time for a new cambelt. Also although many prefer Selenia oils the GTV will be fine using a correctly graded alternative. My GTV is running with Millers oils and has been for many years without issue.

Well done on the new purchase and happy driving

3-years/36000miles for cambelt (so you have another 11000 miles yet depending on time).

Any oil of the correct spec is fine.

3 years/36k is for the twinspark - opinions differ on the V6 but 4 years/48k to be safe seems to be the consensus, 5y/60k at a push.

When I had my belt done on my V6 at 5 years 30,000 the belt was slack (my mechanic was able to pull it off with his finger without touching the tensioner).

He also said the grease had leaked out of one of the rollers.

Leee - which engine do you have? It is the 2.0 that has proved to have a particular weakness in the cam belt, causing Alfa to revise the service interval as you stated. The V6 is MUCH less prone to failure & I am not aware that it was officially revised. Mine is just over 10 years old and had its second belt change just last week. The old one & pulleys were all fine, but the mileage is only 74k.

V6 might not have a revised figure but those with experience would advocate 3-4 years and 40-50k. Just not worth the risk - remember 24 valves and 2 heads if it lets go

My V6 had 73000 miles on it and was on its original belt when I had it changed just after I bought it. This despite a note in the service history that it had been changed 3 years before.

Thanks for the advice, I have a 3.0L V6 GTV. Looking at the replies these engines seem to go longer between cam belt changes than the 2.0L.
