Warning air con & engine temp. problem

I've just bought a beautiful gtv v6 24v lusso on a year 2000 but when i switch the car on the air con also switches on automatically. It also comes on by its self when i move the temp switch. Is this normal? if not, can anyone shed some light as to why this might be happening?
Also the temp guage only gets to around 70 when car has warmed up and the hot air temp inside the car doesn't get vey hot... this could be due to thermostat but could these be in anyway related? Any help greatly appreciated!
WELCOME TO ALFA?!!!

Hi Toni

Aircon going on with ignition is normal. There is a procedure for stopping this (but I can't remember what it is!)

Thermostats commonly fail in the open position. A very cheap and easy fix so yes, WELCOME TO ALFA.

Thanks for that! Air con issue can be resolved which is good if anyone knows how to do it.
So thermostat doesn't need to be replaced then? It could be fixed?

Search the forum for procedure for auto air con: it's definitely here.

Stat should be 70-90 in my opinion whilst driving when the car is fully warmed up, be that motorway or town or traffic. If yours doesn't ever get to 80 or 90 you need a new 'stat.

No, it should be replaced I meant that the thermostat itself is cheap and the job is a doddle.
