Ph2 2.0 TS vs. Ph3 2.0 JTS

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience driving the 2.0l JTS GTV compared to the 2.0l TS GTV?

I only ask as I am looking into what GTV I could potentially buy next and while I would love a 3.0 or 3.2, realistically, fuel costs may be too high to justify.

I've looked on Parkers and it says that although the JTS 2.0l is 0.1 second slower 0-60, it has higher torque and MPH.

Do you think this would be a good enough trade off going froma 2.0l TS to a 2.0 JTS - i.e. would I notice a difference other than the looks of the phase 3 car?

Cheers

I understand that the concensus is that the TS is a more characterful engine, and that despite the bhp figures there is little in it oomph wise between the two.

But the TS needs new belts every 3 years/36k wheras I believe that the JTS is chain driven.

You will probably find some very detailed information on the merits of each on technical sections of the forum if you put in a search.

I can't imagine anyone would go from a TS to a JTS just for performance. Having a newer car and the rarity factor/looks of the Ph3 would be the only reasons.

I have driven both in spider form, the JTS is a sweeter engine, both are cam belt drive, the later 2.2L in the 159 is chain driven.

THe JTS has more power, more torque and at least 10% better economy. The TS is a better looking engine under the bonnet. And a lot of people on this forum prefer the look of the Ph2 front end of the car, I have a phase 3 spider and I love it.

I would be happy with either, I agree though would love a 3.2L V6 the sound is awsome but I think the front end balance is not right, I drove one it just felt like it want to plough into the tight corners, the 2L is better balanced. But again the guys on this forum know the tricks to make them work even with a heavy front end(again refering to a spider not a GTV).

Good luck with your choice, either way you will be happy.

I have driven a 156 2.0 JTS, and TBH I much preferred the TS version.
The TS was free-er revving, sounded slightly better, and felt more powerful.

Your best bet is to drive one of each and then decide.

Early JTS engines also had some development isssues with many engines suffering from carbon build up in the inlet tract after only 20k miles or so. This was down to ECU programming and the inlet cam profiles.

Alfa didn't admit there was a problem, so there are likely to be quite a few affected cars still on the road IMO.

If you speak to someone who has been to the rolling road days at Red Dot - The JTS engines I believe are rated at 165bhp - I don't think they have had one that makes that power yet.

They all calculate on the rollers about the 140bhp mark if not a tad less.

I'd go for the TS engine personally - I have heard reports it is Zippier.

Cheers guys, looks like I'm gonna have to suck up the petrol consumption and go for the V6. I haven't driven one yet , so I think it will be a case of any doubt will be removed from my mind as soon as I put my foot down!

I promise you won't want a 2 litre after you have driven the V6.

There is a massive performance difference.
