Breakdown / Recovery

Hi,

Not wanting to tempt fate for anyone, but can anyone provide details of their breakdown policies / experiences?

I have used Europ Assistance before (based on price) but never had to use them, It seems like the AA and RAC are circa £130 a year for the platinum cover levels, however rescuemycar.com and first call and Europe assitance are more like £40 a year.

Anyone had any experience of the cheaper end?

Thanks in Advance.

I pay £ 40 to £ 50 with my car insurance thru More Than. They use Green Flag. They have attended twice in the last 2 years quite promptly so have no problem in staying with them

Re: Breakdown / Recovery

I've been in the AA for years (early 90's).

Very rare I've needed them, but found them to be superb in both response time and technical knowledge when I have.

Last time was the alarm going mad on my GTV, considering its not a common car I was impressed that the AA man took less than ten minutes to work out where the control box was hidden and bypass the bloomin thing!

I just pay for the basic level of membership, which just gives you roadside repair or a tow to the nearest garage if thats not possible, costs just shy of £50 ish. They also give me free "home" service for being a long term member.

Well worth it in my books given how much a tow costs if you're stuck in a dead car...

Re: Breakdown / Recovery

Thanks guys.

I currently have it with my insurers too, but wonder if i could not get a better product elsewhere for less money too!

I think elephant.co.uk want about £58pa and the bargain basement boys I mention above seem to provide a better service for less (recovery to home anywhere in the uk and onward travel etc.)

I opted for the full works with More Than, so I get roadside repair, homestart & recovery to a destination of my choice including recovery in Europe. At less the 60 quid I thought it was good value. I look at AA & RAC can't remember the exact quotes from them but they were dearer. Green Flag who the insurance company use offer a decent service.

Having had a recovery without breakdown cover costing nearly 100 quid I'm glad I took out the recovery cover.

Re: Breakdown / Recovery

The missus was with the RAC for years at about £80 per annum, then got cover through a company car scheme which only covered the car, not the driver, so I had to arrange separate cover for us in the other vehicles.

I got the equivalent cover to what we had before with the RAC, but in my name, for £26 by using Tesco clubcard deals. The points are said to be worth four times their face value when used as specific deals. We usually just cash them in for shopping as most of the deals are a bit hit and miss, weekends away to places you don't really want to go to and so on, but the RAC deal was actually highlighted on the channel 5 financial advice programme 'It Pays To Watch'.

Checked it out and it was all good. Around £100 worth of cover for £26. Helps if you use Tesco of course, I'm sure a fair few on here would so thought it would be worth mentioning.

Ironically, Tesco's standard breakdown deal is with Greenflag I think, for more money, go figure.

Re: Breakdown / Recovery

I second the RAC through Tesco clubcard route. Been having some problems of late and found RAC very good. Broke down on saturday going to a friends caravan for the night - they towed me the last few miles (why is it always the last few miles?) and told me to ring them the next day when we wanted to go home - meant could relax and enjoy the night and day without having to worry about driving home!
