Re: Does A Recon Engine Add Or De Value A Car

It really depends on how many miles the recon engine has done and what condition it is in. I wouldn't have thought it would have added much value though unless the recon engine was much lower mileage.

It will certainly be worth more than a car with a knackered engine though.

Re: Does A Recon Engine Add Or De Value A Car

Arguable...if you need a replacement, obviously fitting one will improve its value - 'cos as a non-runner its value is pretty low....

Whether a reconditioned engine rather than a second-hand replacement will affect the value is another issue. If you get a re-con engine from a well-known supplier - maybe Ital-Autos - which offer a guarantee, it'll cost you £1200+ (ish)...a second-hand good condition engine will probably be £700 - that's what I sell them for - and its debatable which is the best option. If you are selling straight away, then selling with a guaranteed recon engine should help the value, and certainly make it easier to sell. If you are keeping the car....it sort of depends on "whether you feel lucky, punk?"

Is it better to spend the extra £250 and have a recon engine fitted or not?

I would say yes. If the new engine goes bang after it has been fitted, then the seller cannot blame you for fitting it wrongly.

£250 to fit it sounds a bargain.

No further news from Alfa then tomcole19, they're adamant the engine is a total goner? What about the people that worked on the engine prior to you buying it? Is that work still under warranty?

Have to agree, snatch his hand off, that's a lot of work for very little money.

Re: Does A Recon Engine Add Or De Value A Car

No meant, its about £600 to £700 for a used engine + £300 to £400 to have it fitted.

On ebay italautos will fit a recon egine for £1250,

Got someone else looking at it 2moro, i hope its just a bent valve or something, when it was in alfa i forgot to say that the head gasket was replaced and valves were reground, and the alfa man said wish you said that before hand.

As the engine doesnt really sound that bad to me when its warmed up ill just drive it till it goes bang.

Re: Does A Recon Engine Add Or De Value A Car

Oh, I get you now: 2nd hand bought and fitted is £1000-£1100, recon is £1250 bought and fitted. Depends on the condition and mileage of the 2nd hand unit I guess, and the guarantees on offer from both options. Are you sure there is no comeback on the garage that did the engine work on your GTV? How long ago was the work done and how many miles ago?

Ill give them a call, the only problem is they are in sussex and i live in s.wales.

But if it is the big end cant really blame them as they only fixed thr head gasket, ill give it a go see what they got to say.
