New 305mm discs

Hi folks,
I know that the 305mm front brake disc issue has been discussed to death here but after just buying my GTA several weeks ago and now finding the car shuddering under even mild braking over 60mph I can't afford to go to the expense of upgrading as I have the 17" multispoke alloys. The car is out of warranty as it is October 03. I don't intend taking the car onto track for the next 3 years and am happy with the braking in all other respects. I therefore just want to replace my front disks. Do I go for Alfa discs and use different pads such as the Ferodo DS2500(the forums usually say no) or would the Tarox 305mm sort out my woes(collective wisdom is undecided about this). I would like to pursue AR but I bought the car in Scotland and live in Cork, Ireland so even if AC in Edinburgh was receptive to pursuing a claim the cost of getting the car to Scotland would be prohibitive. I know that there has been a lot of time and knowledge expended on this topic but I am approaching it from a replacement 305mm angle so hoping someone will have taken the route I need to follow..

Thanks

Rory

Re: New 305mm discs

Paid members of this site get a discount of 40% on Red Dot's discs (Basically Tarox). I would recommend some Ferrodo DS2500s for pads.

Re: New 305mm discs

Having re-read that thread I don't think its clear what I did.

I am running 330's behind standard multispokes. I achieved this by using hex head bolts which my dad sourced from a local specialist.

I think theres a thread on here (AO) with more info....

Re: New 305mm discs

Chris,

thanks for your info. I had read your post and assumed that when your father had given you the bolts that they were custom made and therefore extremely difficult for me to get(could rob them off your car . However, following your link to the website The Nutty Company - Online fastener supplier of nuts, bolts, screws, washers, rivets, threaded rod and pins, hardware and more. I see now that the bolts there are the same specs. Would it be safe to assume that these bolts will have the same head dimensions as yours and therefore will be OK to use?
I have been on to red dot after reading other threads and can get a XJ - 6 Groove Disc set of 305's for ca £210 including shipping to Ireland. Replacing one set of 305's for another is no problem but if I go down the 330 route then even with keeping the multispokes I am looking at a bill of close on £1000. Not having solt my last Alfa yet and knowing that I won't be going onto a track for quite a while I am leaning towards the 305's and if they warp then going for the 330's. My mind is not even close to deciding yet though so all input appreciated.

Re: New 305mm discs

Hi insidius, having the same problem myself. Mine is a Sep 2003 car, and the discs have just shown signs of warping after changing the pads. trouble is I cannot afford the full on upgrade at the moment, so I am thinking the same as you.

I would like the 330s if I can hold out as the car doesn't get much use. Anyone got an idea on cost of parts and fitting if done outside warranty etc? Not that great mechanically and have nowhere I could do it anyway.

Re: New 305mm discs

Eddie,
the cost of the 330's upgrade mentioned in other threads seems to be slightly less than £700 and I would imagine less than 4 hours labour would sort it out. The bolts are $3.30 so will not be adding a significant amount to the bill. The 305 upgrade is a DIY job if you have a torque wrench set. Even if you got someone to do it I imagine an hour's labour would be enough. What's the worst that could go wrong.......

Reading back over this and your brilliant thread, I am starting to think about the 330's. So thanks Chris, everything has become much clearer with the 17" multispoke issue.

Also how much can you expect to get for the old calipers? Selling them on would make it a cheaper and more viable prospect.

Re: New 305mm discs

eddie, you could sell them for about 150 for the calipers.
