Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
incredible, finally the my GTA is the car it should have been, feels like it corners on rails . . .it pulls you in faster and it is rock steady, seems to have removed all torque steer from day to day driving . . . haven't really pushed it yet, did a couple quick taps from standing start about 50% of throttle, and it sprang forward without a blink of the VDC light, feels very tied down and solid, can't explain it but it feels like a much more refined (ie controllable) version of my old GTA (pre Q2) . . . .
I have only 1 concern . . . . . .where to put my Q2 badge it arrived in the post today !!!!!
Those of you who are undecided, don't be, best money I have ever spent, I have fallen in love with her all over again . . .
People are just no damn good

Sorry for the ignorance, is the Q2 an Alfa OEM diff replacement? Did you have the work done at your Alfa dealer? Was it expensive? I think I remember some members doing Quaife LSDs - are these better? I am looking for my next upgrade now, so I may follow your trail!

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
Q2 is an alfa part, similar to the quaiffe I think, but a lot stronger than the original, and well suited to the car . .

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
my independant alfa specialist fitted it . . .ordered it from ebspares.co.uk, 1 of 8 of us here in australia who did so ( we seem to have a high number of the standard straight diffs going bang) so we thought some preventative maintenance in the form of replacing it with a Q2 was a good idea from a reliability , and increase in driving performance point of view.

Do they do one for a GTV?

Pretty sure they'll only fit the V6 GTV's.

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
I don't believe the Quaife diff is any better than the Q2, in fact I'm not sure I could tell the difference between the Madeno Racing diff in Peter K's car and the Q2 diff in my car (currently).
Both were very good diffs, and one is a third the price of the other
Peter K has the "Madeno racing diff" but he seems very sure that its actually a Quaiffe diff.
I have to say that it performed much better in his car than the definite Quaife diff I tried in another GTA, but that was probably down to the more track oriented suspensions setup in Peters car allowing the "Quaiffe diff" to work better than on a more softly suspended car.
These torsen diffs (i.e. Q2, Madeno, Quaife) can be significantly affected by large degrees of roll which can cause torque transfer to collapse once the unloaded wheel doesn't have a lot of grip to offer.
Torque sensing diffs have no pre-load to correct wheelspin should it actually occur under the minimum transmissable torque to that wheel by the diff.
[EDIT: of course they are better than the OEM open diff in practically any situation so this isn't a real criticism]
It might actually be the case that the Q2 diff has a slightly greater torque bias ratio (TBR) than the Quaife diff - which *might* mean that it is theoretically slightly more suitable for sporty FWD applications .
That said I would defy most people to tell them apart.
I highly recommend purchase of one, its the performance bargain of the century - well done to Alfa for giving such a decently priced present to faithful Alfisti
Cheers,
TB

Thanks for the great info - this will definitely be my next upgrade (if prices in Japan are as good as they appear to be in Europe). Notice any downside to changing the diff (besides obviously voiding the warranty?).
Thanks!

replacing an alfa part, with another alfa part, at an authorised dealer . . why voiding the warranty ?

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
Hi Charlie,
no I noticed absolutely no downside to the Q2 diff comapred to the oem diff.
Its silent and unobtrusive.
I wouldn't say that they eradicate torque steer, especially for highly modified GTAs but I don't think make it any worse and hugely delay when wheelspin would occur.
Off the line starts are efficient, and you now can really do something with the throttle under hard cornering
(especially with an uprated rear ARB which allows the fronts even more tractive effort by reducing the relative cornering load between front and rear axles)
Cheers,
TB

Well Done GB. I know what you feel. It is amazing isn't it? My next upgrade will have to be Coilover.
Hey where did you get the Q2 badge from?

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
Just checked with my Alfa guy - since the 147Q2 isn't sold in Japan, no one has ever made the change on a 147GTA yet. Do you know the part number (and price you paid)? I may be able to import it through Alfa, or, if that is too expensive, may try to do a direct import of the part from somewhere in Europe myself.
Turns out there may also be a warranty issue here in Japan as it isn't an OEM part on any of the Alfas here - hope I can work this all out.

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
Hello,
I found a document describing the process of changing the normal diff to a Q2.
The document is in German, and contains list of the necessary parts and so on…
It is too big to attach (1 meg) , but send me a PM with your e-mail if you want it.

Re: Q2 installed in my 147 GTA Selespeed
hey charlie, we got ours (group buy of 8) from
http://www.ebspares.co.uk/news77.htm
Price was around 260 GBP + 30 GBP each for postage to australia.
the Q2 is not an option here in australia either, fitting was around $1000 AUD, and a new diff bearing was required at $220 AUD.
Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the info, but the German would be an obstacle for me as well as for the Japanese Alfa people. I am sure I will be able to sort this all out soon though...

Sounds like about 200,000 yen, which means that there are several other Japan-based companies which do diffs in the same price range (slightly more, but without the hassle of importing). Will start exploring this more and let you know what I find out. Congrats though, on what sounds like a fabulous upgrade! Give us more details on your impressions as you play with the car under different conditions...

For the SEV, the link to their homepage is here (sorry, it is in Japanese). These parts have been used quite widely over the past 5-6 years on the Japan race circuit:
http://www.sev.info/automobile/index.html
Same goes for the ARC stabilizer kit (Japanese only) - here is a diagram of the parts, with the price for the kit for a GTA which is very reasonable (33,800 yen). It is a three position system and completely transforms the handling of the GTA (GREATLY reduced roll!) :
