Motor Control System Failure

Hi guys

Just as the weekend started I got this error message which has not gone away.

The car is still running 100%.

Hopefully it won't be anything major - but I have read on hear it may be a lambda sensor. Any ideas how much these are to have replaced. Is it a big job?

Cheers

Re: Motor Control System Failure

Thanks for the replies guys

Turns out it was a lambda sensor and will cost about £200 including fitting. Could be worse I suppose.

Re: Motor Control System Failure

I know you are using Arnold Clark usually but it might be worth asking McLennans, they are first class and on the whole cheaper.

Cheers

Re: Motor Control System Failure

Hmmm hasn't it been suggested that it could be a dodgy battery and/or dodgy midi fuse?

Re: Motor Control System Failure

Hi Ecurie Ecosse, mine had the same error message. Be prepared, because when it comes back it will say EBD Failure, ABS Failure, ASR failure, shut off engine, do not proceed any further, go to dealer etc..

I advise that you get this checked a.s.a.p. David C's post on this was excellent, it is usually the battery or something electrical. So after reading David C's post, I changed the battery, and she drove well for a day or two, but error message stayed on. I also noticed that during hard acceleration, the battery light in the speedo cluster flashed on and off. Then on the weekend while driving to the dealer, the sound system started clipping and then all the error messages came on again.. and she died on me.

I found the root of the problem. The alternator is fried. So that is getting changed now, which is a humungo job on a GTA because its behind chassis metal, so the cross members and whole bottom end of the suspension has to come out to reach it, or so i have been told. I have also been told, that because i am in a hot country the cooling fans run all the time, and we use the a/c all the time we drive in these parts, so all this drains plenty of amps from the alternator, which i have also been told is a 120 or 150 amp, not sure?!. Anyway, i know it's not a tall tale because when i took my car in, there were two other Alfa's there, a 166 3.0v6 and a 2.0TS both getting their alternators changed. This seems to be a problem in Dubai, UAE.

I urge you to please get your car checked out. It could be a lamda sensor, maf sensor, coil pack, alternator, battery... I will be interested to know what your dealer tells you the fault is. Play it safe and good luck.
