2.5 V6 Steering rack conversion to GTA spec

GTA steering rack conversion

Pulled the subframe and rack off the 2.5 tonight:

the 2.5 rack and sub frame are the mucky one on the left.

Eper lists different part numbers for the GTA steering column and the 2.5 steering column. I've measure both and they are the same diameter and length. I'm 99% sure the pitch of the teeth are the same and the racks themselves appear to be externally identical, so no problems there.

Eper also suggests that the sub frame is unique to the gta but I can't find any differencs between the two.

Looks like its all good!

So gimmie more or nothin at all.

Im fairly sure the difference between the 2 racks is the internal gearing - with the gta rack being a bit 'quicker'. you could probably test them both before you put them on with a suitable cog on the spindel from one lock to another if you wanted.

errrrrr, that's why I'm changing the rack. The GTA is ~1.7 turns lock to lock and the V6 ~2.2 turns....

Therehas been some debate as to wether or not it'll fit on account of the GTA having a different steering column and sub frame.

Re: 2.5 V6 Steering rack conversion to GTA spec

Damn this post is about the most helpfull in my entire life Chris!! Good man!!!

So what do you reckon.. should i change the order to a GTA rack? Any change you will "test lock" the rack and collumn in the near future?

For other reading this thread, this information chris is providing is gold!!

Chris was nice enough to speed up the process on this part of his project, since i've got a broken steering reack, and wanted to fit the GTA one if possible..

If it works its definitely good news for anyone with a V6/JTD in need of changing the rack, because not only is the GTA rack better then the 2.5/JTD, it is also cheaper!!

I see - that wasnt exactly clear from your first post.
I have to ask the obvious though - why not just buy a 156 gta? (theyre now getting to be as cheap as chips) I guess theres a 100% obvious reason why but I havnt seen anything posted here so thought id ask.

@ Peter K

yeah ok. I'll give it go this week. I'm 99% sure it'll fit no prob now.

@ UK

It was supposed to cost 3 - 4k for the entire build....... its all a learning curve.
