Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

Someone mentioned this in one of the other threads. Is this the case?

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

yes.

AFAIK, all the 6 speed gearboxes fitted to 147/156/GT is made by Getrag. Please correct me if i am wrong here.

Speaking with an Alfa techy yesterday he said that the GTA gear boxes are very heacy duty and that he has only has to replace 1 and that was due to the clutch exploding and damaging the gear box.

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

They must be pretty heavy duty, they seem to be able to cope with a lot more torque than standard into the bargain.

Hmmm Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

MikeB..
..there must be at least 5 AO's with 147gta's who are already on their 2nd even 3rd gear box.....

That doesn't sound like a heavy duty box of cogs to me!!!!!!
Especially when this particular Bella model is not yet 3/4yrs old....

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

147 gta gearboxes are made by cadbury's......... if they are made by getrag (which I very much doubt) theyre made VERY poorly.....

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

Is it not the same gearbox family fitted to the diesels? If so its handling a fair bit of torque when it comes to chipped 20 valves, pretty strong chocolate. The diff damage on some GTAs always sounded to me like the sort of issue you get when you go wheelhopping everywhere when driven with too much ethusiasm and not enough respect.

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

seems to be weak synchros in the usual fiat places - 3rd gear, 4th gear etc

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

Are the 147GTA gear boxes different to the 156GTA gear boxes?

There does seem to be a fair amount of posts reporting 147GTA gear box problems but not so many 156GTA.

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

I wasn't counting the bizzare clump of open diff damage reports that the Aussie 147 GTA owners were apparently experiencing.

I know of people who have been running +50 percent power and torque through their gearbox for track days without issues so the internals of the gearbox seem pretty strong to me.

Were there really many synchro problems?
I wasn't aware of it as an issue (had only previously seen one post on the topic).

Would be interesting to know if the affected owners thought engine braking was a "good idea"?

TB

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

Well I know some cases of broken GTA differentials in Holland. I heard someone say: "soon or later the GTA differential will brake". Well it's just what I read on the dutch 156 forum.

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

I thought it was a stronger version of the 6-speed box fitted to the fiat stilo abarth.

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

Its a real problem down under, my brother's car is in the shop as we speak with a broken diff......Coincedence, or faulty batch?????? From my count that make approx 23 cars with broken diffs in Australia.

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

i dont have much technical knowledge abt gearboxes, only tat the Skyline GTR34 also has a getrag gearbox?

anywys, i used to own the 147gta, & if its any indication of any problem - in the mornings, the clutch pedal was intermittently very "loose" u could lift it up with your toes, & when u let go, the pedal drops significantly...

usually it diminishes when u warm up the car a little.

My fren who also bought the 147gta together with me has a more severe problem; while on the highway, when he depressed his clutch pedal & released, the pedal did not engaged & stayed down!! he had to stop at the highway shoulder & get his car towed..

Now, there is anothr worse problem... engage 3rd gear, rev to beyond 4000 rpm, and voila!! the gearbox automatically snaps into neutral gear!!!! imagine ure doing a corner in 3rd gear & suddenly........

im not sure what happened after that and whether it got fixed... are the above experiences an indication of a "broken diff", synchro problem??

Re: Do GTAs have Getrag gearboxes?

There is a friend of mine that is a Senior Engineer at the University of Sydney. He specializes in Machine Gearing. He also happens to be an Alfa Enthusiast!
He takes on 2 cases a year in his spare time to take on ATECO(Alfa Australia) regarding the Differential Problems. He's won every time.
He came to the conclusion that the GTA Differential gears are very week in some areas and can not take the power of the 3.2 litre engine.
