Skin peeling!

Got a bit of a vanity problem.
The previous owner decided to cake on the wheel cleaner (acid) onto the wheels and thus the lovely red brake calipers.
and as a result the lacquer has peeled off the calipers and the colour has faded. looks like some sort of plastic falling off.

What options do I have?
Is it possible to repaint it? and if so how? how does things like this? and also if it is repainted. will it look the same as before?

Thanks

I don't know how to help you my friend, but you've put me off using wheel cleaner (which I've only tried once) - particularly as the stuff never seems to do any more than shampoo and a sponge can manage!
