147 GTA

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

I have recently got a set of 330mm brakes and calipers from a new crashed alfa 159 i believe little money. However I have everything to fit them to my 147 except for the 159 comes standard with hubs to take the radial mount calipers so they dont have adapter brackets. Does anyone know a source of radial mount brackets to fit these calipers as the bracket come with the caliper for the 147 upgrade and dont seem to be listed as a separate part.

The shiney silver bracket is the one I am after..

My other option is to measure a bracket and copy it myself.

The best brake upgrade on 147/156 GTA is to use Performance Friction brake pads, have any of you guys tried them?

Performance Friction Brakes

If not frankly you are wasting your time.

Obviously you can't use the 159's discs because the PCD is different (5x110 on a 159, 5x98 on a 147/156/GT)

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

Hi Ned, What coefficient of friction are the pads you are recommending, and are they suitable for track use on type-R tyres, or just road use?

I haven't tried PerfFriction explicitly, but have gone through about 10 sets of various pads (ordered roughly by stopping power) including

Ferodo DS-3000 (competition pads, but streetable in moderation, last very well)
Ferodo DS-2500 (extremely streetable pads also suitable for racing, last very well + kind on discs)
Galfer Racing pad from Autodelta (strong braking but don't last for hard track use from very high speeds)
Ferod DS-Performance, (excellent uncompromised road pads, good for track too, last well, kind on discs)
OEM chocolate pads (Will last 2 hours on track, kind on discs (as you would expect of chocolate))

Looking at the Performance friction website it appears like it hasn't been updated for 4 years and doesn't have any technical info on the performance of its pads.

If the Perfromance friction "carbon ceramics" range are really used as OEM by Ford and GM (as their web page says) then its unlikely they would be better than many of the above, although no doubt better than oem Chocolate pads..
AFAICS DS3000 are used by WRC cars, so do stop the car pretty quickly!

Cheers,
TB

I'm not a doctor - but I really do recommend braking later

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

Trailbraker the part number you need is 1001.11 and they are available from Demon Tweaks. I can buy them cheaper from America which is what I would do as I but quite a lot of parts there for my race car.

The ones you need are the carbon metallic, I have more technical information at work if you require it.

Try them, if they are not the best pads you have ever used I will not only eat my hat but I will buy the pads back from you. (This offer applies to Trailbraker not everyone)

They are suitable for road use as they do not require "heating up"

Ned

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

Thanks for the part number and the link Ned.

Its possible I could try them in a few months.
If I do, I have data logging equipment that would show how they compare against some of the others.

Cheers for the interesting offer, I'll post feedback plus telemetry if possible) on this forum if I do get them

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

Has anyone tried to get the brake upgrade outside the warranty. I have a 03 SW and have just started to notice the brakes pulsing. Its only done 27k and used on the road so I thought I would not need the bigger brakes.

Whats your pad and disc wear like.
First thing to check after that long a period,
would say you have zero chance after 27K if the original discs!

Paul[ I have just had my brakes diagnosed by my dealer (bishops guildford) and the service manager has sent off the claim for an upgrade. The point is you wont know untill you try! best off luck.

PS the money people that try the better.

My brother has just booked his 147GTA in Mangoletsi's for the upgrade.
03 reg 50k miles (I think). Alfa are paying half the cost of parts and labour.

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

just letting you know the latest on my brake upgrade story

Alfa are paying a 1/3rd so it's costing me about £450 to have it done, I'm booked in at the start of january....

spoke to Alfa a lot of times, the amount of contribution they make really does vary depending on what part of the country you are in and the details of your car.

with so many upgrades being done and enquired about, why don't Alfa simply offer an upgrade at a reduced price for everyone.

Hi Chris155,

How did your brother manage to get Mangoletsi to pay for half his upgrade, I would be interested to understand the best way to persuade them to do this.....

Thanks

Re: ***Definitive 147/156 GTA brake upgrade thread***

My 156gta came with upgraded pads from the factory, but i am sure they are warped. Has anyone experienced warping with the big discs ? I havnt had a chance to drive the car hard yet and it appears to have happened recently.

Any ideas ?
