Alfa GT 1.9 JTD

enough is enough

Well after 9 months of ownership and more time in the dealer than I care to remember (just short of 5 months) the GT is being rejected. The final straw was it was in mangos for 2 weeks while Alfa tech tried to sort the window closure problem and a “popping” type backfire. On return the very next day it was “popping” and two days later same error with the window. Alfa tell me Its had

3 Body control units
2 ECUs
5 Window module controllers
2 Door switches
1 Throttle body
4 door sensors
2 door switches
2 system reprograms (That I know of)
1 reverse light switch
2 Replacement reverse light switch wires

And a few other things I just can’t remember, I know many said reject it months ago, but due to the complexity of the leasing system in work and a change in lease policy it would result in a change of car unless I could get Alfa to do a like for like swap, and that was never on the cards, the lease will have to be cancelled and a new car quoted for, so it seem likely I will not get a replacement, a shame as believe it or not I would have another.

Thanks to everyone for their help and info lots of what you have told me on here and, in emails have helped, and has been fed back to a very helpful guy at Alfa, who I know reads this forum now. Its been a testing yet good 9 months of ownership and I will be sad to see it end

Andy

Re: enough is enough

I'm very sad to hear this, but of all the GT owners on this site you appear to have (1) the most problematical GT of teh lot and (2) the patience of a saint.

As a rejected car I assume it'll go back to Alfa in Italy to be fully inspected rather than just palmed off to someone else as a used car?

Just for the hell of it, I really think you should write a full description of the issues from the last 9 months. Post it to the regional manager for your dealership, the CEO of the leasing company, the MD of Alfa UK and Herr Kalbfell at Alfa Italy. Send them all recorded delivery and makes that at the top of the letter you list all of the other receipients. Keep it polite and courteous (as I'm sure you would anyway) and say what you've told us - that even after all the grief, you'd still have another one.

I've posted the address for Alfa HQ in a couple of threads before, so if you can't find it by a 'search' I'll dig it out for you.

Just do us all a favour and DON'T buy a BMW!

Re: enough is enough

i'm an alfa man and always have been but if the guy buys a bmw, you know as well as i do, he won't be so keen to get another alfa.

if its reliability you are after, bmw are still streets ahead and that hurts but its true

if its resale value you are looking at then bmw win again

its been said so many times before but i'll say it again, buy alfa with your heart, buy bmw with your head

thank goodness i dont use my head

Re: enough is enough

BMW have problems too.
A friend of mine has been trying to get BMW to take his faulty car back for a year now... they finally took it back when there was a very obvious fuel leak into the cabin...

Re: enough is enough

Was that when he poured half an gallon in and threatened to drop the match in after?

Sorry to hear this Andy, every manufacturer has their bad days...how quickly and easily they accept the duffer back is the important bit.

Re: enough is enough

When I was changing my car, it boiled down to the GT or the M Coupe. The more digging I did the more problems I found with the BMW. If the car didn't have the £750 per year extended warranty it was likely to cost you £2000 every now and again to get the VANOS fixed...kinda like the Alfa variators really.

The difference is the dealers.

However I stick by what I said. Put it all in a letter.

Re: enough is enough

wow i feel sorry for you reading all those problems. my car had a few problems too but never in the same league as your GT.

unfortunately you have got yourself an bad example out of the alfa range. electronic problems still exists but not in the same extent as your car. please dont let it put you off buying another alfa in the future

Re: enough is enough

The sad thing is I am told that the car will go back to E.S.Jones and be resold, how bad is that, I will be interested to see if the new owner has as I think he will have a perfect car or will it be as troublesome. I have all the points documented and will be writing as suggested

Re: enough is enough

Sounds like you have had a terrible time of it, but you'v emade the right chioce, even if the car was perfect from now on you'd would never have any faith in it, there would always be that doubt in the back of your mind that its going to die on you.

Re: enough is enough

Dan55, you haven't got mine mate trust me I'v still got it. Thankfully for me Alfa have agreed to do a like for like swap so another one is on order. I know from here and chatting to a good mate at Alfa that I have had more problems than anyone, but as I have said in other threads I simply love it, its just this one has been a pain. The new one is on order, and there are a few lease problems to get over but hopefully should be here soon. Alfa have paid the termination so its just a case of waiting. I feel sorry for anyone who buys this one as I feel sure it is just going to give more problems. Sandys you are right, about the never having faith in it, I just expect to have something go wrong. The final straw was Alfa were going to take it to Slough and keep it for several weeks, but techy told me "we don't have time to look at your car we are too busy with the launch of the new Fiat". I thought well if you guys can't fit it in, then why should I put up with no faith in in, hence the rejection. Hopefully my new one will just have the odd rattle, but watch this space.
