Help Need advice about Oil Level

I've had a 147 GTA for about 4 months. When I received the car the dealer had used Castrol Magnatec 10w40 in the car. As this oil is not even fully synthetic I decided to change it for Selenia 10w60 as recommended in the user manual. The problem is that the mechanic I took the car to put 7 Litres of oil in the car. I recently checked the level and it's about 1 - 1.5cm over the max mark. I checked elsewhere in this forum and found that the engine only requires about 5.9 Litres. Now I know these cars to burn oil off, but will this excessive oil cause any damage? I've had different people tell me different things. Just want to know if anyone has an educated opinion on this.

First of all, you are right to use 10w60, dealer shouldn't be using 10w40

As for the level, if they've put 7l I would be inclined to drain a bit off, if it was just over 6l sort of level I think it would be ok, but 7l might give you problems.

yes this could cause damage as any liquid will become a solid when compressed if it has nowhere else to go, however if you avoid high revs for 500 miles or so it should either seep out from filler cap or burn off harmlessley enough, if you intend any hard driving then i would drain some off or take it back to the garage and get them to do it, it is after all their mistake.

I'd drain it in case you damage the cat or the engine.

I have a neat hand pump bought from Demon Tweeks that has a pipe you can put down the dipstick tube and suck some out with.

Took it back today and got it drained. Mechanic still reckons it would have been okay. I will have to take it somewhere else next time as he obviously hasn't got a clue.

Wow! - no it wouldn't have been okay
A litre overfilled - crikey thats bad enough, but to additonally ignore it when pointed out is negligance.
It defintely wouldn't "burn off" quickly and you would have been running serious risk to your engine all the time, the level could have taken 6 months to drop to normal.

Good you went with your gut feeling and did the sensible thing , it only takes a few minutes.
