Max Coolant Temp

Taking my son to school this morning, only about 2 miles, message on dash "coolant temp max" & the gauge is up to 130 in the red, limped back to the office (1/2 mile) popped the bonnet and the coolant res is almost empty, & looking down the front of the engine bay pink liquid all over it, seems to be coming from a seal along the front of the engine, called alfa dealer, they said top it up with water and come straight down, will let you know later the outcome

Re: Max Coolant Temp

Wow, 130C, that could be serious, a seal coming from front of engine could be head gasket - at least it is under warrenty,

best of luck

Re: Max Coolant Temp

Have they any idea what caused the split? Was the hose fouling something sharp like a clip or did it just fail on it's own??

Re: Max Coolant Temp

well the slightly better news is that the punto has gone, i now have a vauxhall zafira - hired by the alfa dealer

the bad, no really frustrating news is that i called the dealer at 2pm to check what time the car would be complete only to be greeted with...

dealer - has no-one called you sir? the part unfortunately did not arrive overnight as there are none in the country so we have ordered it from italy, we will need the punto back so have hired you another car

me - any idea how long it will be

dealer - i will check the eta and call you back

no call back - surprise surprise

arrived at the dealer to drop off the car

me - any idea when the part will be in

dealer - have checked the eta and there isnt one

me - what does that actually mean

dealer - eta means estimated time of arrival

me - I KNOW WHAT ETA MEANS what does it mean when there isnt one

dealer - we dont know when it may arrive

dealer - your lucky its not august

me (Dumb question) why?

dealer smiling - the factory is closed for a month !!!

me - got up, got in my !!Bloody!! zafira and drove off into the sunshine

"Petrolhead Heaven - The only way to get there is in an Alfa Romeo"

Bad luck Leigh. Hope you get your GT back soon.

Why did they hire you a bloody Zafira? Shouldn't you have been give a 'similar' vehicle.

BTW, did you get to NAD on Sunday?

Re: Max Coolant Temp

The Zafira was the best vehicle enterprise had either that or a matiz!!

if the hire runs into next week the rockets will start to fly!!

We did get to NAD, we were parked near the autojumble area, next to the blue s type Jaguar (my dads - he's registered diabled so they let him park closer)

Re: Max Coolant Temp

Oh yeah, I saw the Jag close to where we were camped and wondered why it was there. There was an old Capri parked near me.

I thought you would have had some pics to share with us by now.

Re: Max Coolant Temp

Right, the first thing to remember is that the factory may well be closed in august but all of Fiat SpA and Alfa Romeo's suppliers are contracted to supply aftermarket service parts all year round. The parts are availalbe regardless of the factory shutdown dates.

Make sure that your dealer knows that you know this.

Secondly, if they can't give you an acceptable ETA tomrrow (ie the part will be couriers from Italy tonight sir and will be fitted to your car by Friday lunchtime) call Alfa UK and register a complaint about dealerships not carrying replacement parts for a current (nearly new) model, and that the parts aren't in the country AND that Alfa UK and Alfa Italy haven't supplied the dealer with an ETA.

At the very least, you have brought this shortcoming to Alfa UK's attention. At teh very most you'll have your GT back in time for the weekend.

Good luck and give'm hell,

DC

Yes & no, I now have a Diesel Mondeo (not sure if thats a + or a -)

Still no ETA from the dealer, asked them if they had checked all dealers in the uk, and apparently not everyone updates the uk online stocklist so no?? the main parts distributor in warrington have none, Guest in B'ham have none but they have had one in the last nine months, Desera none, Mangoletsi None, Dixons Leeds None,

Alfa Uk - couldnt get through earlier and then didnt get back to the phone until after 5pm. back on the case at 8am tomorrow when they open

The guy in Leeds was very helpful, its the same JTS engine as the 156 and the spider, but its a really unusual part to go hence no stock

The guns are a little p'#=-ed and tired....just had some pasta mmm

I am going to post a help topic on the general alfa page ( the phrase clutching at straws springs to mind )

Re: Max Coolant Temp

The same has happened to me with my V6, and only when driving the living daylights out of the car. The coolant hose breaks at the place where it meets the engine, thankfully, all three times less than a kilometer from home. I don't know if it's a common problem with them or it's due to my very heavy right foot.

But it's a V6, is there any other way to drive that car that isn't redlining a lot of the gear changes??
