330mm Brake Upgrade

Are there any "official" recalls or notifications regarding upgrades from the 305mm to 330mm brakes?

Thanks - Ken

Re: 330mm Brake Upgrade

No official recall. The service manager I spoke to said that Australia weren't swapping the brake systems over, even if the rotors were warped.

An interesting statement, as my 305mm discs have warped slightly from normal road use, so I might have to see what the officially say as I have only done 11,000 km.

I was hoping there was something official in Europe that I could use to convince ATECO to do the right thing.

same in my country... but wat i think is a more feasible option is for u to petition ur dealer to get in the 330mm discs at the factory price...

tats wat we did here in spr.... managed to get it at less than 1700AUD for a pair of larger calipers/330 discs/pads + installation.

good luck... try reaching a compromise.

P.S: the big brakes IMHO are a must... any big brakes... the blardy 305mm are totally insufficient & dangerous - even a 200bhp golf gti standard brakes are 312mm up front!!!

Not even an option. All our GTA's have 305mm rotors up front. Even to this day.

I think you'll find all GTA models in Oz after march 2004 came with the new upgraded rotors 330mm.

M8 since March04 all 147GTAs have upgraded brakes, is yours a 156? if so then they were all 305s. There are still new GTAs for sale with 305s but the built date is of course pre March 04.

The big reds are like those on the Boxster S, Stis, Evos.

Any GTA offered for sale as 'new' with 305mm brakes will have been built before the end of 2003.

Re: 330mm Brake Upgrade

I'd be interested to see if anyone in Oz has 330mm rotors. Checked the latest specs. Still quoting 305mm rotors.

Re: 330mm Brake Upgrade

I can't speak for models sold in Australia, but all 156 GTAs which came off the production line after November 2003 were fitted with the improved front brakes.

Calipers look about right but the discs on my 156 GTA are not grooved. I do have the 330mm discs as original fitment.

The Brembo caliper is from a 156 GTA.
The disc is a Brembo floating racing disc. Its grooved/ventilated and bolts on via 8 small nuts and bolts onto a custom made billet aluminium bell that in turn is bolted onto the hub of my car.

This is all custom fabricated onto the front of a 147 turbo.

Re: 330mm Brake Upgrade

Whats the deal with brakes in the UK. I have just bought a 2003 156GTA registered September. Is this a recall or just a change in spec? as I am sure that mine are the 305mm discs.

Cheers
Adam

There is a free upgrade to the new (after Nov'2003) 330mm spec, but to get it your brakes need to have warped.
If your 305mm brakes are working fine you may have difficulty getting the upgrade.

A few smacks of a sledge hammer or a welders bench press will warp/dissfigure them nicely .

Sorry, just me being a smart arse.

LOL no worries, but why the sledgehammer? i'd much prefer a tank of optimax and take it for a blast down some B-roads with some effort I am sure I could warp them

Id say it would be so boring to drive/scratch on the b-roads in a GTA All that cornering and hard braking and accelerating. It would be no fun and just be boring

Re: 330mm Brake Upgrade

All you need to do to warp them is take it for the blast as described above, then stop and keep your foot hard on the brake until they have cooled down.
Do that a few times and you can warp any discs...

If you don't want your discs to warp, as soon as the car has stopped use the handbrake and take your foot off of the brake.
